A GEM BEYOND THE DUST

Tucked away just outside the fringes of Accra, it is hard to believe such a lovely looking place is at the end of that bumpy, and dusty Teiman-Abokobi road. I am told it was built as an international students hostel (Now that is one very posh and well equipped hostel if you ask me). Hill view Guesthouse , is not actually "Guest house" standard if we are judging by the size and beauty of the place, the standard of the pool, the completeness of the gym, size of the restaurant, the number of rooms and the exquisite decor. I was there with friends and we loved the swimming pool. I plan on going back for happy hour on Friday. I am not going to talk about the Hotel/Guest house aspect of the place because I have not experienced that. I can talk about the pool, gym, ambiance of the outdoor and a bit about food.  Also I will not rate their stars yet , because I am convinced I did not have enough to work with(I do not want to be unfair). I have had it at the back of my mind to do this post for almost 2 years now. I really do not know why I have not posted about this place all this while but I think today is the day. Let ’ s call it #ThrowbackThursday!! I was born in August … That makes me fabulous by default. It was a day to my birthday and I met my friend Mona and my sister at Ci Gusta (Another one of my most favourite places in Accra). My sister and I wanted some real food … we were not in the mood for a sandwich or waffles or anything like that. We saw the Maestro sign upstairs and thought … Let ’ s try it out. So Mona my sister and I stepped into Maestro There is a lovely bar downstairs, quite simple yet classy. The d é cor is very elegant. Great lighting... that perfect combination of not too dim but not too bright. We went up the stairs and there was a battalion of staff literally smothering us. THE SPOT- BARNAS

I set out on Friday to paint the city “Black and Yellow”. My brother asked for pizza and I wanted to get him the best pizza I could find... So, I asked around and I got two recommendations for a particular location and off to BARNAS I went.. It’s at Ahodwo-Nhiayeso. When coming from Adum, turn right at the Ahodwo round-about and take the first left and it’s just to your left. There is a sign so it’s not hard to find. During the ride this was me... “I’m going to a cool and fancy pub” I got there and it was technically a “Spot”. I entered the place, actually I walked into the place because it’s not like there is a door or a particular entry point. There was this strange scent that met me under the tree. I don’t intend on being mean but it smelled like Guinness Ghana fermenting hops to brew beer in front of the bar. We quickly headed for the other side where it didn’t smell odd. ETHOPIAN IT IS...

I took a trip to the capital to get you this review. I met a friend at East Legon and we decided to grab something to eat,we looked across the street and there it was. I asked how hungry are you and the response was... very hungry.... Ethiopian it is then!  When I asked what the name of the place was they told me... Ethiopian restaurant... just that.   I wondered why that name!!   but I guess they were proving a point : either it is the only or the first restaurant in Accra that serves mainly Ethiopian dishes. I’ve never been to Ethiopia but when I entered the place I imagined that's how Ethiopia is. It has a really nice traditional look with sacks on the ceiling, raffia and some kind of thatch looking material. There are also some traditional tea sets and ceramic bowl just to add to the traditional feel. The decor was traditional and yet classy.
